US Fish Importation Regulations - 30 Day Extension Granted

A temporary reprieve
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has announced a 30-day extension before new regulations affecting the importation of koi and goldfish go into effect. The new rules will now become effective October 30th, 2006, rather than September 29th as originally planned. The US government said it delayed the implementation date because importers and exporters of koi and goldfish, as well as some foreign governments, requested additional time to prepare for the changes.

The new regulations pertain to live fish, fertilized eggs and gametes of fish susceptible to Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC). These include koi and goldfish.
The regulations’ provisions include requiring an import permit and health certificate indicating that the shipment originated in an SVC-free region; limited shipments to only certain designated United States ports of entry; and meeting certain containment requirements while in transit within the United States. Importers are also subject to user fees for obtaining the import permits and port of entry inspections.

International Waterlily Society Hall of Fame 2006 - Rich Sacher

Only one award to the Hall of Fame was made by the IWGS at their annual symposium in Florida this year. This was to Rich Sacher, owner of American Aquatic Gardens in New Orleans, Louisiana. A tireless hybridiser of waterlilies, he is the author of "Hybridizing Waterlilies: State of the Art", recently published by IWGS.

Fish Next?

The UK Wyevale Garden Centres' Group move to cease trading in live animals has been welcomed by Animal Aid, an organisation that claims garden centres are totally unsuitable environments in which to sell animals as they encourage impulse buying. Animal Aid is continuing to press Wyevale to phase out the sale of ornamental fish from its aquatics concessions. A spokesman for Animal Aid said: "We will be pressing Wyevale to stop these sales too. After all, fish are animals and are deserving of the same level of care and consideration."

Fountain Scents

American manufacturer Jungle Labs has introduced a product called Fountain AcScents. This is a new fountain product that combines water conditioners with a subtle fragrance in a fizz tab formula. Used weekly, the product protects water pumps from damage caused by hard water deposits and white scale. Fountain AcScents are available in Spicy Citrus, Creamy Vanilla, Cherry Grove, Fresh Mint, Gardenia and an unscented version.

Ugly Goldfish Operation

A disfigured fish at a museum in Scotland has undergone surgery to remove a lump from its head, after visitors complained about its appearance. The goldfish at the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh had the "harmless but unsightly" lump removed from its head during surgery paid for by museum visitors. According to a report from The Scotsman newspaper, although the fish showed no signs of distress due to the growth, scientists at the museum decided that the fish should undergo surgery to remove it. A spokesman told the paper that the fish's eye also had to be removed along with the lump during surgery.

GLEE Product Awards - Aquatics - 2006

The international Garden and Leisure Exhibition product awards have been announced. A team of fifteen expert judges from the garden, pet and leisure industries studied more than two hundred and eighty GLEE New Product entries in fourteen categories. The products were rated for innovation, design and originality; how well products met the gardener’s needs; and any unique features or technologies setting the product apart from competitors. They were also judged for quality, fitness for purpose, environmental impact and value for money. The following are those that are particularly relevant to water gardeners.

New UV from Sentry

Sentry Ultraviolet Inc. has introduced a UV Titanium PVC Stainless Steel-Lined UV, which comes stainless lined or unlined. The PVC has titanium added in liquid form to help reflect UV. The ballast has LEDs showing the unit has power and a new Lamp Out sensor showing if the lamp is on or working. Canna Bulletin

A new Bulletin has been published about the Royal Horticultural Society’s trial at their Wisley garden last year. The trial comprised a wide diversity of cultivars, numbering 152 in total, including a several that are commonly grown as marginal aquatic plants. The Bulletin gives details of 22 AGM (Award of Garden Merit) winning cultivars, and contains pictures and comprehensive descriptions of each AGM Canna. Also advice on cultivation, possible threats from pests and diseases and details of other cultivars in the trial. Rock Face Boulders and Panels

For those landscaping a water garden or koi pond, the range of Rockworld of Cape Town’s rock face boulders and panels are difficult to surpass. These are manufactured from glass fibre reinforced concrete. This is a Portland cement-based composite with alkali-resistant glass fibres that are randomly dispersed through out the product. Aquatic Art Competition Results

The Overall Winner
According to the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society, their first Annual Aquatic Art Competition exceeded all expectations both with respect to the number of entries received and the calibre of the artwork. Aquatic Nasties

Aquatic Nasties In Water Near You by Louise Thomas, is published in the Alpha series by the Royal Society of New Zealand for use in formal educational curricula. "Alien aquatic plants are invading a waterway near you. Winterizing a Pond

Winterizing a Pond is the title of the final practical seminar of 2006 from Baltimore, Ontario, Canada-based Burns Water Gardens. New TetraPond De-Icer

TetraPond has introduced the TetraPond De-Icer. This helps keep an area of the pond ice-free during the winter and prevents smaller ponds from freezing solid, according to the manufacturer. This energy-efficient model uses only 300 watts and is effective in temperatures as low as -20ºF degrees. Oase Withdraw From GLEE

It has been reported that multi-national water gardening product supplier Oase have withdrawn from the UK trade exhibition GLEE 2006. Annie Dyke, Petindex Sales Manager confirmed that was so, but said: "We have a fantastic show in store this year. Demand from exhibitors across the pet and aquatic’s industries has been exceptional. The reported contraction of GLEE’s Water Gardening section has in fact been largely due to Oase, who took the decision to withdraw from this year’s Glee to support their home show in Germany. However, we are delighted that Oase have already indicated their intention to return to GLEE in 2007" she said.

The Thermoplanter

Black River Nursery, has introduced the Thermoplanter, a new piece of equipment for waterlily enthusiasts that is designed to extend the growing season of tropical waterlilies. The Thermoplanter creates a micro-climate around the plant, using less than 70 watts of power. Details click here.

Rare Phragmites Offered
Phragmites karka ‘Variegata’ is one of the rarest and most unusual marginal aquatics. This is now available from Epic Plant Company, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. Originating in Japan, this choice reed rarely grows more than 90cm (36in) high, and produces green leaves that are strikingly striped with white. It may be late in the season to buy one now, but be sure to book one for next season as they will doubtless sell quickly. Further information click here.

Algae Witch Launched

M² Polymer Technologies has released the Algae Witch, an algae removal tool that has a light-weight, cast-aluminum rod 6-feet long with an attached brush. To clean the brush, pull back on the brush handle. The brush passes through a comb that removes the collected algae into a pail. It should be available now through water garden suppliers in North America.

Aquatics at GLEE

A number of new aquatics bookings and thriving pet exhibitor attendance mean that the UK trade GLEE Petindex exhibition is expanding this year. The additional interest brings the combined Hall 4 Aquatics, Pet and Water Gardening presence to a higher level than 2005’s record-breaking show, with around 280 companies.Taking place at the NEC Birmingham from 17th-19th September, nearly every key brand in the aquatic and water-related sectors will be represented. Focusing on the complementary interests of garden ponds, decorative statuary and outdoor water features, the adjoining Water Gardening section will include around thirty exhibitors including Henri Studio, Gordon Low, Heissner, AquaBio International and Aqua Hydrotech.

New European Hardy Waterlilies

Several new hardy Nymphaea have been formally registered with the Water Gardeners International Checklist . Niigata Koi Disease Free

Mr Hajime Isa has given his 5th and final report on the KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) outbreak for the Niigata prefecture. Niigata is the Japanese prefecture made famous for being the birth place of koi, and has been given the all clear to lift restraints on the distribution of their koi. New Savio Weir

Savio Engineering have introduced a 31-inch installable weir that will accommodate a cascading waterfall. The weir also works as a small filter. The filtration system can be retrofitted to existing ponds, and pond-free systems, with flow rates up to 10,000 gallons per hour. Carp Control Using KHV

A two-year project has been established to investigate the effectiveness of using the Koi Herpes Virus as a way to control strains of carp present in Australian water bodies, and will examine whether the virus will have any impact on native fauna. "The virus works by attacking the carp's gills as well as other vital organs and eventually killing its host," said Marc Crane the project leader. "Koi Herpes Virus is attractive as a biological control agent as overseas studies suggest that it has a very limited host range, infecting only carp."

And Finally - "When is a fish not a fish?"

When is a fish not a fish? When it is a giant killer reptile with four legs and sharp teeth. Politicians in Australia have been pondering the meaning of "fish" and have passed new laws making it clear crocodiles should be fish too. The decision is at odds with the arbiter of the Australian English language, the Macquarie Dictionary, which rules that fish are "completely aquatic vertebrates, having gills, commonly fins, and typically an elongated body usually covered with scales". New US Import Restrictions for Ornamental Fish

Regulations are in force 29th September
Live fish of most species may be imported into the United States without import requirements from USDA. However, eight species of fish that are susceptible to the disease Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC) have recently come under USDA oversight. These species are: Common Carp, including Koi, Cyprinus carpio; Goldfish, Carassius auratus; Grass Carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellus; Silver Carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix; Bighead Carp, Aristichthys nobilis; Crucian Carp, Carassius carassius; Tench, Tinca tinca, and Sheatfish, Silurus glanis.

New regulations have been developed for the importation of live fish and their gametes (eggs and milt) from these species. The regulations pertain to commercial shipments and to fish brought in to the US as personal baggage. Live fish of these species may continue to be imported, provided they are accompanied by a USDA import permit and a veterinary health certificate issued by a full-time veterinary officer or Competent Authority of the National Government of the exporting country.

Importers must now use new identifying Harmonized Tariff Structure import codes assigned by the International Trade Commission for these species on shipping manifests and invoices. The new rules become effective 29th September 2006. For further information click here.

New Model Blanket Weed Controller for Australia

A new and improved model of the Blagdon Blanket Weed Controller has been launched in Australia. It is an electronic device designed for fast-acting control of light green frothy cotton wool-like blanket weed in ponds of up to 22,700 litres.The device has a unique microprocessor which emits varying radio frequencies through antennae cables. Instant Baby Shrimp

Ocean Nutrition has developed Instant Brine Shrimp, a revolutionary product that allows fish-keepers to use brine shrimp when and where they are needed. The product consists entirely of sterile new-born nauplii in a water solution. Nothing else has been added. The product is completely natural, as if the shrimps have been freshly hatched at home. A New Scented Waterside Bamboo

Phyllostachys atrovaginata ‘Green Perfume’ is a new winter-hardy waterside bamboo, which is shortly to be introduced to gardeners by Dutch bamboo specialist Jan Oprins. Originating from China, it is a straight, upright-growing plant, which reaches a height of 5-8m (16-26ft). The shoots are edible. When the young stalks are rubbed the scent of incense is released. New Australian Waterlilies

Nymphaea georginae
Three new Australian species of waterlilies from Queensland have been described by Australian expert Dr. Surrey Jacobs of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney and leading American authority Dr. Barre Hellquist of the Department of Biology, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The designation of three new species is part of the on-going investigation into the Nymphaea of Australia which until recently have been quite poorly studied botanically and little understood horticulturally.

Understanding their cultural needs is much easier once the nature of the plants is fully understood and Drs Jacobs and Hellquist are to be lauded for their lengthy and pain-staking work in bringing order to at least some of the Australian native species, even though it is acknowledged that much more will need to be done. With the availability of DNA studies, such work can be assured of much greater fixity and reliability than hitherto, this being demonstrated clearly with the confirmation that the plants usually grown in gardens under the name ‘Albert de L’Estang’ are a variation within Nymphaea immutabilis.

The first of the new species is found growing in the area around Normanton in the north of Queensland and has been named Nymphaea carpentariae as its natural distribution appears to extend around the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is a lightly scented, day-blooming plant, which for the most part is white, but occasionally blue, and differing from N. macrosperma by its usually larger flowers, and from another new species N. georginae, by smaller seeds.

Nymphaea georginae grows naturally in the billabongs and flood channels of the upper parts of northern rivers flowing into the Lake Eyre system. It is named for the Georgina river. A day-blooming species, it produces its fragrant flowers on stout stems high above the water. The flowers are mostly white, occasionally blue and rarely pink, all of which fade with age. It can be distinguished from N. carpentariae by its larger seeds, and from N. macrosperma by the larger blossoms of blue-flowered plants which fade with age.

Nymphaea alexii also grows in northern Queensland. It is quite a distinct species with its unique cream stamens and its small ridged seeds. The white blossoms are day-flowering and scented, and held above elliptical leaves up to 15cm long and 10cm wide. It is named after Alex James Fussell, the grandson of Dr. Jacobs.

The filter employs a manually operated agitator to dislodge most of the pond residue that accumulates in the filter chamber. The filter uses their proprietary Bio Matrix reusable solid filtering media. This media, when agitated, releases accumulated dirt in the canister, which is then flushed out in the backwash cycle. Redesigned Aquascape Biofalls Filter

New Zealand’s Dirty Dozen

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) are keeping up the offensive on alien aquatics that have escaped from cultivation and are now causing serious environmental damage. Three species, Water Lettuce, Annual Wild Rice and Bog Bean are reported to have been eradicated, but the remaining nine still pose serious problems and demand constant vigilance from everyone to ensure their eventual elimination. Aqua Research Center Opened in Canada

Researchers have unveiled the newly expanded animal health centre in Victoria, Prince Edward Island, where innovative research will uncover solutions for controlling disease-causing pathogens in farmed fish. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to introduce the recently renovated Novartis Animal Health Center for Aqua Research and Development, which is a facility that houses the development of leading animal treatments, including research and development of fish health products, vaccines and pharmaceutical products for prevention of parasites.

The 3rd Edition of the Koi Identification CD with its 400 photographs, mostly taken by Martin de Jong, and a wealth of information about koi varieties, classification and history is due for release by Koi Village by December 1st 2006. Further details click here.

Welcome to Water Gardening News. This blog replaces the original PondMessenger blog. KHV Outbreak in UK Worsens

KHV is spreading
More than 200 stillwater fisheries in the UK have been stocked by fish suppliers believed to be possible sources of the UK's current Koi Herpes Virus outbreak it is believed. A letter from the Environment Agency received by the Angling Times, states that there have been 12 confirmed cases of KHV in stillwater fisheries in England so far this year: ten of the fisheries have been legally stocked this year with carp from 26 different suppliers, but the remaining two have not been legally stocked this year; suggesting that either KHV was already present in the fish, or that it was introduced on illegally stocked fish. UK Algae Treatments Launched in North America

Green Ways of the United Kingdom have introduced Pond Mat, Pond Pads, Pond Snip-Its and Pond Strip barley straw treatments to American water gardeners. All treatments are made from cleaned barley straw stitched between layers of knitted cotton netting. New Lavender Pond Pads feature barley straw and lavender stalks for use in ponds with pumped water circulation. Pond Snip-Its are designed for ponds up to 700 gallons; Pond Pads for ponds up to 2,100 gallons. 2006 German Waterlily Introduction

German aquatic plant specialist, Christian Meyer, of well known waterlily growers Seerosen Farm, has just announced a new hardy waterlily cultivar for 2006. Called ‘Iolanthe’ it is a hybrid between ‘James Brydon’ and ‘Wow’. It is said to be a large growing cultivar with dark green leaves that are reddish-brown when young. The flowers rest on the surface of the water and are a brilliant pink colour. Further details click here

"Nymphaea minuta"

The description of a new species of waterlily from Madagascar, which was recently published in the Water Garden Journal of the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society Vol.20:No 4, has proved to invalidate the name. Unfortunately the original authors did not include a Latin diagnosis as is required when describing a new species scientifically, and this over-sight was not picked up during editing. So the name N. minuta is invalid. The outcome of scientific deliberation is awaited.

Is the Future for Fancy Goldfish in Jeopardy in the UK?

Uncertain future?
The UK government has confirmed that a study on freak pets, including fancy goldfish and genetically modified fish, will help shape the forthcoming Animal Welfare Bill. The study entitled Breeding and Welfare in Companion Animals has been produced by the Companion Animal Welfare Council (CAWC) and emphasises the many problems that occur in pets through selective breeding. UK Pond Survey Training Courses - Ponds Conservation

Pond Conservation are running pond survey training courses again this year. The one day courses cover use of national standard methods for surveying ponds for plants and invertebrates. They will be held at Rhydymwyn Valley Nature Reserve, near Mold, north Wales on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th August, and at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd August. The course costs £200 for government / statutory bodies and commercial organisations and £50 for charities and volunteers. Further details click here.

Abattoir Waste-water Fish Project to Expand

The first effort at culturing fish in an abattoir’s wastewater has been successfully completed in a trial in South Australia. Tatiara Meat Company, a lamb exporter, consumes about 1 million litres of water in an average day in its operations. Most of the water used is then recycled, however, waste water held in storage ponds is now being used to grow ornamental goldfish and carp, which purifies the water making it suitable to irrigate pasture for fodder for livestock. Environmental officer Fil Farina says the project is likely to expand. "A lot of meat processing works do have storage lagoons on site and also a lot of them do have further processing facilities. I do see a big future for this sort of a project".

Monochoria africana

One of the most beautiful indigenous South African aquatic plants is the subject of description and attention on the national South African Bio-diversity web-site. Suggested as a replacement in South African water gardens for the declared weed Eichhornia crassipes and declared invasive Pontederia cordata, it is now said that it only needs someone to learn how to propagate the plant for it to become a hit in every water feature.
